Mazatlan 2007!

A little over a month ago, I came home incredibly frustrated about work and said to Lynne, “We need to go on vacation!” To which Lynne said, “How do you want to pay for this?” And I looked at her and replied, “We don’t have anything on the credit cards do we?” With that, vacation was approved.

As always we about another week to decide where we were going. It needed to be cheap since neither of us really requires first class accommodations to have a good time. It needed to be an all-inclusive. It needed to be on a beach. And in the back of my mind I wanted it to be near the city. Mazatlan came up very early in our search. Cuba showed up. And a favorite of ours, Cancun made an appearance. I really wanted to try to fit in a cruise but that idea was quickly abandoned. I’m scared of Cuba. Too many stories of bad weather. So it became a showdown between Cancun and Mazatlan.

Luckily my parents were in Mazatlan the week prior as part of their cruise so I gave them a call to ask if they liked it. Both of them said they enjoyed the time and my dad gave it an especially big thumbs up so that made the decision a little easier. In the end we both decided that we wanted to experience something new so Mazatlan became our choice destination. The cheapest nicest resort was El Cid Castilla. While there were a few negative reviews, the overwhelming response was quite positive so we went ahead and booked our vacation. A week and half later we were off!

I’m still not sure what Lynne’s overall impression is of Mazatlan but I really liked it. We were initially scared because in traveling from hotel the second night, we saw a few restaurants and then a couple of little markets and then that was it. We honestly thought that was all there was to the city. We were pleasantly surprised the next day when we rented one of the pulmonia’s (golf cart type taxi cabs) to take around the city. Mazatlan is a very interesting city that is a nice blend of old world charm seen in Old Mazatlan and the new with malls and resorts. The people there were incredibly passionate about the history of their city. However, unlike some tourist destinations the people that work there did not seem to be overly happy. They did their job and they were certainly respectful. But you definitely got the sense that they were putting in their time. That’s always the plus and minus of going away. I always feel bad for the people that work their but it is always makes me grateful that I was born and raised where I was. It really is the luck of the draw!

Food! Glorious Food!

If there is anything that I enjoy about vacation is the food. The picture above pretty much says it all. Normally you go out to eat and you get A lobster tail. MAYBE two. We went out to two seafood restaurants and we got about the same amount each time. The cost of each meal was more than reasonable. That said, even the hotel food was amazing. I never starved.
